Humans need stories. This is how we better understand ourselves and why folklore has been around since the dawn of time. By definition, a fable is a short moral story with fictitious or improbable characters and events. We learn to understand who we are by identifying parts of ourselves with the characters and events in fables. According to Marie-Louise Von Franz, βAll we do actually with fairy tales is reinterpret the religious and folklore traditions so that they may again be linked up with the conscious attitude.β In the telling, repetition, and recycling of our stories we are able to identify what is shadow and what is heroic. What we learn from them depends on our willingness to engage in critical thinking and self evaluation.
