Standing in the mystery, not knowing and not needing to know;
nevertheless, allowing ourselves to dance with our devils.

The Pardon in Perception is patterned after Dagnan-Bouveret’s The Pardon in Brittany, one of my favorite paintings in the Met. It depicts an annual procession of penitence where the parishioners walk an ancient path, ending at the place of pardon. In the mise en scène, the penitent parishioners ignore two beggars as they march, focused on their own thoughts of redemption. My version has variations of me on a path of seeking enlightenment. To collect the spiritual light that imparts wisdom, I must confront, question, and deconstruct each of the rules that the first half of life gave me. This second half of life is an epic journey of sifting and sorting through what we have been given while simultaneously offering generosity to our inner child and continually trying to love those around us in the eternal now.

The exquisite miracle that is a caterpillar transforming into a beautiful butterfly demonstrates how patience and struggle in growth and experience transforms us into the beautiful being we are intended to be.

On these crowns are four replicas of etchings and aquatints from Francisco Goya’s 1864 suite of works called The Disparates; He made these toward the end of his life after having felt the effects of the Spanish Civil War and worked at the royal court, where he saw the underbelly of greed, power, and wealth, and had an illness that left him deaf. He was down on the folly of humanity that seemed to lack rhyme or reason. These figures are contemplating how we connect to the divine through our sorrows, folly, and hardships. Our human fallibly and the dreariness of this life are tools we can employ to seek enlightenment.

In devotion to art, she sits with the poise of one who surrenders to eruptions of creativity. She puts trust in her inner knowing while the torrent of ideas rages under the surface. She honors the process of transformation while seeking the fullness of creative expression.

All the things that get between you and enlightenment.
Worth: If you are good, then God will love you. If you are nice, they will accept you. If you are pretty, they will admire you.
Vanity: What are you willing to sacrifice, a toe a heel, to fit into the shoe? Compare yourself to other’s false display of perfection.
Judgement: You are being watched and measured and you will never be good enough. 5.Fear: Carry a heavy burden of self-doubt and irrational fears disguised as humility.
Pride: Self protection and the ego swinging a tiny stick that actually only hurts you.
Authority: Those who speak for God and tell you what is truth, trust them before you trust yourself.
Memento mori and lunar cycles, your one wild and precious life.

I used to be overwhelmed, I used to be so busy I couldn’t think, I used to keep questions buried. I used to watch ideas float away when I couldn’t bring them down to the earth, I used to feel like I was sitting on my hands, I used to think I was a little bit crazy. I used to feel like the fire in my belly was eating me from the inside, I used to stay quiet about it, I used to do what I was told. Now I seek balance, now I let my passion fly, now I stoke the fire.

How we use these, that which we become

I SING to use the waiting,
My bonnet but to tie,
And shut the door unto my house;
No more to do have I,
Till, his best step approaching
We journey to the day,
And tell each other how we sang
To keep the dark away.
– Emily Dickinson

I FELT a funeral in my brain,
And mourners, to and fro,
Kept treading, treading, till it seemed
That sense was breaking through.
And when they all were seated,
A service like a drum
Kept beating, beating, till I thought
My mind was going numb.
And then I heard them lift a box,
And creak across my soul
With those same boots of lead, again.
The space began to toll
As all the heavens were a bell,
And Being but an ear,
And I and silence some strange race,
Wrecked, solitary, here.
– Emily Dickinson

The Butterfly upon the Sky,
That doesn’t know its Name
And hasn’t any tax to pay
And hasn’t any Home
Is just as high as you and I,
and higher, I believe,
So soar away and never sigh
And that’s the way to grieve–

As a sister in Zion I celebrate my angelic errand to comfort, support, and be with those in need. Charity is giving service because you love God and you love God’s children, serving when no one is watching and there is no expectation of reward. I would be a conduit for God’s pure love to pour out upon others.

We already have our own demons jabbing their sharp little swords at us. Though we may not appreciate the proximity of demons that aren’t ours, it may be a necessary byproduct of our most intimate relationships. Unintended, but the inevitable result of devotion and familiarity.

One pure truth at the core, at the very heart. Two conflicting concepts of what you want it to be and what you think it is. The ultimate goal and desire is to align the differing thinking minds with the core truth. This is to be complete, this will be perfection.

The eyepatch is used as a tool to be a contemplative observer of one’s own mind and emotional process. Emotional intelligence calls for self honesty to align the inner and outer selves. An eye also looks out because interacting within the world is unavoidable and important. And while we look inward and outward simultaneously, we acknowledge that we are not beings of this world, but of a spiritual one, having this physical experience together.

Permission to be great: for your potential is infinite.
Permission to be sad: for an open heart receives comfort.
Permission to fail: for that is how we learn.
Permission to hunger and strive for success: for all will be balanced.
Permission to let go: for forgiveness brings peace to the soul.
Permission to be bold: for your voice has significance.
Permission to disrupt: for our daughters will reap the rewards.
Permission to accept criticism with poise: for you choose what to pick up or put down.
Permission to believe when things seem unjust and to be certain in your faith as you hope for change. Rejoice and be glad, for all will be well in heaven and you will be joyful with your sisters who came before you.
